A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck southeast of Loyalty Island in the South Pacific near Australia and New Zealand.
The news agency Reuters reported this information on Friday morning.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) said in the report that there is a tsunami threat in Vanuatu, Fiji, and New Caledonia.
Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology has issued a tsunami warning for the east coast of Lord Howe Island.
Quoting the United States Geological Survey agency USGS, the report also said that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 38 km in the ocean.
The New Zealand Herald, citing New Zealand’s National Disaster Management Agency (NEMA), said there was a risk of ‘strong waves’. ‘Unexpected waves’ were seen on the coast.
In September 2021, Cape Victoria was rocked by a 5.8-magnitude earthquake.
This earthquake occurred 110 miles away from Melbourne, Australia. The quake struck near Mansfield, northeast of the city.
Until then, it was one of the largest earthquakes to hit Australia in decades, with a depth of six miles. The Australian Department of Geosciences confirmed the depth.
It took place as far away as Sydney and Tasmania. According to the witnesses of the earthquake, the walls of the buildings were collapsing. They said they heard a sound like a jet plane during the earthquake.
Two more earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 and 3.1 occurred 18 and 39 minutes after the earthquake, respectively. Bricklayers working from a building under construction fell onto the road in Melbourne’s Chapel Street area.
